The Daruma Doll: A Symbol of Resilience and Hope

The Daruma doll, with its rounded shape and determined expression, is more than just a piece of Japanese culture — it’s a powerful symbol of perseverance, goal-setting, and the human spirit’s ability to rise after hardship. Inspired by the story of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, the Daruma is designed to return to an upright position whenever it is tipped over. This reflects the Japanese proverb: “Nanakorobi yaoki” — “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”

This message of resilience and determination makes the Daruma doll an incredibly fitting symbol for a fundraiser supporting cancer research.

Cancer is a journey marked by challenges, courage, and hope. The Daruma embodies the same spirit — it encourages people to set intentions and keep moving forward, no matter how many times they are knocked down. Traditionally, one eye of the Daruma is filled in when setting a goal, and the second eye only when the goal is achieved — a simple but powerful act of commitment and belief.

At this special event, Daruma dolls will be hand-painted by artists from around Australia, each one transformed into a unique work of art. These pieces serve as both visual expressions of hope and tangible contributions to a cause that touches so many lives. The act of painting the Daruma becomes symbolic in itself — breathing life, intention, and meaning into each doll, just as researchers and supporters work toward new breakthroughs in the fight against cancer.
